Agglomeration Applying High Intensity Mixing (Mechano-Fusion)

The project "Agglomeration Applying High Intensity Mixing (Mechano-Fusion)" is part of the priority program 2289 "Hetero-Aggregates" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Hetero-aggregates are created by the dry particle coating process called mechano-fusion. The surface of larger host particles is coated with micron- or submicron-sized guest particles, an ordered mixture of guest particles on the surface of host particles is formed. Specialized functionality of the created hetero-aggregates is the a result of hetero-contact formation during the coating. Intensive characterization of the coating structures using 2D and 3D imaging and correlative worflows by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray micro- and nano-computed tomography (micro-CT and nano-CT) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) is expected to unravel mechanisms of underlying micro processes (e.g. agglomeration, de-agglomeration, mixing) during the coating. Toghether with stocastic modeling this will enable to tailer functionalities of hetero-aggregates even better.

X-ray micro-computed tomography scans of coated particles after mechano-fusion and process data for each experiment
Friebel, Judith Miriam
During the mechano-fusion experiments for particle coating available process data (time, rotational speed, temperature, power, torque) is recorded.
Samples of alumina coated with polystyrene from three different experiments were scanned using the Zeiss Xradia 510 Versa X-ray micro-CT. The samples were prepared by dispersing coated particles over carbon tape, which was subsequentely rolled up.
