UWRM soll die Siedlungswasserwirtschaft mit den zur Ver- und Entsorgung genutzten bzw. belasteten Wasserkompartimenten in Verbindung bringen. Ziel des Wasserressourcenmanagements in urbanen Regionen muss es sein, Wasserressourcen quantitativ und qualitativ in der nötigen Dynamik sowie die Interaktion mit der technischen Infrastruktur zeitabhängig abzubilden und Ansätze zur effizienten Bewirtschaftung aufzuzeigen. The aim of urban water resources management is, to describe the water related mass flows and their interactions between technical infrastructure and the natural environment elaborately. This should improve the conditions for identifying reasonable and sustainable management solutions.
