Agglomeration Applying High Intensity Mixing (Mechano-Fusion) (SPP 2289 Mechano-Fusion)
The project "Agglomeration Applying High Intensity Mixing (Mechano-Fusion)" is part of the priority program 2289 "Hetero-Aggregates" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Hetero-aggregates are created by the dry particle coating process called mechano-fusion. The surface of larger host particles is coated with micron- or submicron-sized guest particles, an ordered mixture of guest particles on the surface of host particles is formed. Specialized functionality of the created hetero-aggregates is the a result of hetero-contact formation during the coating. Intensive characterization of the coating structures using 2D and 3D imaging and correlative worflows by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray micro- and nano-computed tomography (micro-CT and nano-CT) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) is expected to unravel mechanisms of underlying micro processes (e.g. agglomeration, de-agglomeration, mixing) during the coating. Toghether with stocastic modeling this will enable to tailer functionalities of hetero-aggregates even better.

Publication: 3D Characterization of Dry Particle Coating Structures originating from the Mechano-Fusion Process [1]
A model particle system of alumina (host particle) and polystyrene (guest particle) is processed using mechano-fusion. Samples from three experiments with different process parameters (rotational speed and process time) ...

X-ray micro-computed tomography scans of coated particles after mechano-fusion and process data for each experiment
(Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg, 2023)During the mechano-fusion experiments for particle coating available process data (time, rotational speed, temperature, power, torque) is recorded. Samples of alumina coated with polystyrene from three different experiments ...
